You need more useable space than a sedan offers—but a full-size SUV is just too much for you. What do you choose? A small crossover vehicle may be tailor-made for you—and if you’re here, you probably already have your eye set on the 2022 Honda CR-V and HR-V.
So, two similar nameplates, two similarly sized vehicles… how again are the Honda CR-V and HR-V different? Our team at Ira Honda Saco is here to help the people of Saco, Portland, and Scarborough, Maine, explore these versatile vehicles! Let’s get started.
Let’s start with the names. CR-V stands for Compact Recreational Vehicle and HR-V stands for Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle.
You probably won’t see these labels in Honda marketing, as the vehicles aren’t typically advertised using these terms. But these are the inspiration behind the official model names that you do see!

The CR-V is, as its full name suggests, a compact SUV, the second-smallest-size SUV segment in the U.S. market. The HR-V is a subcompact SUV, the smallest-size segment.
Despite that, the two make excellent use of available space to create comfy riding experiences—all while offering generous cargo volume! Both seat up to five passengers, but the CR-V, with its more generous dimensions, offers more spacious accommodations.

The dimensions may differ a bit depending on trim level, drivetrain (FWD or AWD), and/or powertrain (hybrid or non-hybrid), but these are the standard dimensions for the CR-V and HR-V.
You may find that the Honda CR-V works better as a family vehicle than the HR-V. More generous legroom (and even more so, hiproom) in the rear seats makes them comfortable for extended and frequent use, especially by adults.
Meanwhile, the Honda HR-V is tailor-made for more personal adventures! The rear seats can still easily accommodate three people.

We’ve discussed size at length, but another major way the 2022 CR-V and HR-V differ is their powertrains.
The Honda CR-V features two powertrain options: a standard all-gas 1.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine and an available hybrid 2.0L 4-cylinder with electric motor. The HR-V features just one powertrain: an all-gas 1.8L 4-cylinder engine.
As you might expect, these powertrains offer different outputs and fuel economies. Let’s take a closer look:
While the difference in size accounts for the difference in power (i.e., the HR-V needs less power to move with same gusto), you’ll still probably feel a bit more energetic in turbo- or hybrid-powered CR-V.
As you might imagine, the CR-V Hybrid is the most fuel efficient of the bunch, so take that into consideration if you’re aiming for fewer stops at the fuel pump!
Neither the 2022 Honda CR-V or HR-V is “better”—they’re just different vehicles made for different folks.
If you’re aiming for an affordable SUV, ideal for more intimate adventures, the HR-V is an excellent choice. Families that need more space and drivers who want more pep (or efficiency) in their step will like what the CR-V brings to the table.
We recommend Saco, Portland, and Scarborough, ME, shoppers test drive these vehicles before choosing. Book a visit at Ira Honda Saco and let us know you’re coming! We have the CR-V and HR-V here and can answer all your questions.
